If you are heading to Oman from Dubai, I assume you will go the Hatta route. We used to goto ras al hadd, which is about half way to salalhah.
There is a Turtle reserve there. A nice fishing lagoon and some super beaches, we used to go there between June and September windsurfing and surfing, the monsoon whistles past there, and there are some awesome waves.
It is about 12 years since I went there but, vaguely remember heading for sur, the road ran out and just following the dirt upto the lagoon(couple of hours) where the turtle reserve and old fort are. There is a village there with a few bits, and a water plant I think! We found a pipe hanging out the side of it. which was a nice shower as we had been there two weeks with nothing!
The main attraction for most people is the turtles, so you need to get the correct season.
