I'm just kicking ideas on route and costs around at the moment.
The route will probably be Dubai, through Saudi, Egypt, ferry from Port Said, possibly then to either Greece or Italy and then onto the UK from there.
I know I will need to get a Carnet de Passage from the ATC UAE. Will call them this week to find out details.
Anyone got any tips or advice on these trips from first hand experience?

Hi Nick
I am planning the same trip on a KLR650 in March. Plan to start in mid March. I am taking the long route through Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan , Kazakstan, Russia into Northern Europe and onward. I intend to return through the southern route through Turkey and Bandar abbas. I am planning for a three month round trip
The Sharjah -Bandar Abbas ferry is currently non-ops but the Dubai-Bandar Lengeh ferry is running.
I got in touch with the Iran embassy here in Abu Dhabi and they sounded quite helpful on the phone. Sadly they said that since I (I am travelling on an Indian passport), will be travelling on my bike I am only eligible for a 7 day transit visa and not a full 30 day tourist Visa.
They told me to present myself at the embassy with the Passport, itinerary in Iran, Bike documents and Carnet and promised to issue the Visa in 3 to 4 days. Its a paper document and is not stamped in the passport.
I am now working on the other visas and would welcome any experiences/comments.
If anyone is travelling along this route I would welcome any planning suggestions
