New Saudi to Iraq border opening

I read on the news that Saudi Arabia and Iraq have decided to open the borders at the Arar Saudi Arabia crossing everyone. The details are still not in, but it will open within a week. This is great news for travelers coming from Europe/Turkey to the middle east. Aslong as you are brave enough to pass through Iraq.

Pretty sure there are no tourist visas issued by the Iraqi Govt for individual travel. You would need to be part of a group tour which are normally pilgrimage orientated I believe.

Last year Iraq announced it was going to start issueing visas for individuals. I've seen few travel instagrammers adventuring there already.

Yes, but so far the visa is only available at Baghdad International Airport as far as I know.

From what I've read it's supposed to be available at all airports and border crossings (except the Kurdistan borders, which issue a separate visa). But you could also get the visa in advance at the embassy in Istanbul or the consulate in Gaziantep.

Yes, the statement released by the Iraqi Government mentioned that the visa is available at all land borders, but so far that has not been the case. I have a friend who works in the travel industry who has confirmed guests who have got the visa at Baghdad and Basra airports (international airport arrival only), but there is not a single account of someone getting one successfully at a land border. That said, few people would approach Iraq from Jordan, Syria, Kuwait or Saudi and Iran has been closed to tourists since the announcements, so it has probably not been tested much. But, I strongly suspect you would not get a visa at a land border.

Unless things have changed, this will not work. Iraqi embassies / consulates do not issue tourist visas to individual travellers. The reform regarding tourist visas regards only on-arrival visas.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
