London Meetup - anyone up for pint?

Or a glass of anything else for that matter.

I'm a new member to the HUBB - retired, living in Central London and seriously up for a long tour somewhere starting this summer. It will be my first (other than holiday biking tours) and I'd really appreciate meeting up with others who've done it, or are planning to. Or just to get to know like-minded bikers.

In the interests of avoiding a) freezing to death b) usual central London parking problems and c) for those who want to enjoy a drink, I'll find a venue near a central tube/rail station.

I'm thinking Sunday evening 17 February. If anyone's interested and can make it just drop me a reply and I'll organise this.

Cheers
Peter

Actually if it starts in the afternoon, say 2 of 3 pm, I may be able to come.

Venue for the HU London Mini Meetup 17th February

HI ALL

The venue for the HU London Community Meetup on Sunday 17th February will be the Wetherspoons at Canary Wharf.

The other (preferred) alternative was The Bike Shed, but this date was difficult for them to host as a full event (but see below).

This Wetherspoon has been used successfully before by the group and, having now checked it out myself, I see there’s oodles of space inside and plenty of off road areas outside to park bikes (though no official bike parking area).

I’ll be there from 4pm onwards, although if some people want to meet up later some of us can move on to the Bike Shed for an evening drink. Just let me know if that's your preferred option and I'll send details.

My mobile number is: 077 100 200 06 if anyone can't find the group on the day.

Unless anyone has any other strong thoughts, I’m going to suggest this is just an informal social get together at this stage as it looks like there hasn’t been a London meeting for a while and it would be good for people to re-establish contact or get to know each other and maybe discuss some plans in principle. If it goes well, and people are keen, we could then arrange a more formal event and hire some space. I've spoken to Stewart at The Bike Shed and he has kindly offered the venue room to us at no hire cost - it's a great place, is on theme and has dedicated and heated bike parking (see: https://thebikeshed.cc/london-venue/). There would be the opportunity at that event for members to properly present their experiences and advice, as well as any plans and maybe some concrete opportunities for members to join up on forthcoming tours. We would also have time to market that event more thoroughly to try and maximise attendance.

Meantime, the full address for 17th February is:

Wetherspoon
The Ledger Building
4 Hertsmere Road
West India Quay
Docklands
London E14 4AL

As well as parking space there’s also good nearby links for public transport including DLR (West India Quay) which is a 4 min walk, and connection with the Jubilee line at Canary Wharf a few mins further, as well as plenty of bus connections.

Finally, the last day of the MCN motorbike show at Excel is also on 17th February, and I know a number of people have said they're going - the Excel Centre is just a couple of minutes ride away from the venue.

Can you let me know if you’re coming, and roughly what time you think you might get there, as it would be useful to have an idea of numbers, and also if anyone has any special needs (for seating or anything else).

I hope lots of you can make it and really look forward to seeing you on the day.

Ride safely!

Hi Maria and Benson

I know you have both asked for this to be earlier and later respectively than the 7pm I was thinking of. I have stretched it out as far I am able - from 4pm until late and so i do hope that enables you both to make it!?

Hi Peter, thanks. Yes we will be there with Alistair. I will check if my friends can join too.
Probably arriving at 4 pm or earlier.

venue is good, very big pub, affordable drinks and food, and quiet as weekends.

See you in two weeks!

Cheers,

I'll try stopping by as well. I just moved to London and it'd be cool meeting other fellow motorcycle adventurers.

Hi anyone bringing something to recognise the gang?
Always intimidating, I find, to go round groups and ask if they are the HUBB people.m

Last time I printed a couple of pages with Horizons Unlimited on it.
We will be coming on the train and tube so no helmets to watch.... shall I print that? We will be in early.

Cheers,

Hello Maria,

that should work, although even without helmets I think we stand out. I hope to get there, possibly earlier than 4pm too.

Looking forward to seeing everyone. It's been a very long time.

Brian

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
