HORIZONS UNLIMITED MINI MEET ORIGINAL - April 14-16 2023

This just in from Glynn Roberts, who famously is the one that stood up and said "I will" way back in 2001, at the very first HU "Meeting" in our garden in Slough, when everyone said to me "you need to do this again next year!" and I said "but we're moving to Canada next week! So one of you needs to do it, who will it be?" - that Glynn!

A small but perfectly formed HORIZONS UNLIMITED MINI MEET in the heart of Derbyshire.

Location:
The Miners Standard
Bank Top
Winster
Matlock
Derbyshire
DE4 2DR
14-16 April 2023

There’s no entrance fee... that’s the good bit… but there’s also nothing organised!

This is a small friendly meeting designed to meet folks and get talking! Everyone is welcome be it caravan/RV or tent. There is no function room but we can use the restaurant outside meal times. I have provisionally made a dinner booking for all of us on Saturday night at 7.00pm.

Winster is an old mining village and worth a walk around, and of course it’s set in the wonderful Peak District. There’s shops and pubs in walking distance.

The pub is open all day. Good food available. Camping is behind the pub. It’s £7.00 per person payable at the bar on arrival. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a motor home or tent all are welcome and it’s still £7.00 per person. There is no electric available in the campsite. Showers and toilets are open 24 hours. There is a £1.00 charge for the showers.

I (Glynn) shall be there from the Friday till Sunday morning rain or shine. I expect most to show up during Saturday either for the day or night and hopefully dinner!

Please help spread the word, I know it’s short notice…..

Hope you can come!

Glynn Roberts

A few of the 40 people that showed up for that first event in 2001, some from as far away as Norway for the weekend!
We took over the neighbours garden as well to squeeze all the tents in.
Were you there?
If you were, and have any photos, please post!

Looks we’re in for a great weekend!

Over 14 folk have already confirmed they will be camping. And 15+ say they will be dropping in over the weekend!

Made up of a good mix of bikes and folk of all ages and from Scotland to Wiltshire!

Dietary requirements and camping facility (there aren’t many) questions should be made directly to the pub. Best to phone them and not rely on them emailing you...
Anything else you can PM me
Please let me know if you’re planning on dining in the restaurant Saturday night.

Real ale available at the bar... there’s not much of a phone signal anywhere and none at all in the pub… and the pub doesn’t have Wi-Fi

Oh yeh and this is the village in Derbyshire and not the one somewhere in Cumbria…

See you soon!

Important Update!
There’s been heavy rain recently at Winster. I’ve had a phone all from the landlady today saying that no vehicles are allowed on the campsite because of the damp conditions. This includes motorbikes. There is plenty of hard standing around the pub for bikes/caravans. The ground is OK for tents.
The forecast is currently 60% chance of light rain Friday evening and 0% on Saturday!
Hope you understand and I’ll see you soon!

Update!

HORIZONS UNLIMITED ORIGINAL APRIL 14-16 2023 UPDATE
Torrential rain on Friday got this off to a damp start for the 8 hardy souls who turned up Friday evening.
But what a weekend it turned out to be!
Over 40 people showed up over the weekend! 26 sat down for dinner on Saturday night!
Folk from Ireland, Worcester, Scotland, Cumbria and Long Eaton. Most camped, 4 campers, A few bikes for the day, GS’s, Africa twins, Tenere’s and even a well travelled scooter….and of course a visiting Land Rover (there’s always one)
Conan Easson donated some raffle prizes, the £22.00 going to the upkeep of the website(would have been more but not everyone has cash these days…)
It was clear to me the appetite for another meeting is huge so watch this space! I personally loved the comradeship and atmosphere of complete strangers mixing and mingling over the weekend in a busy pub.
It exceeded my expectations Thankyou all for coming!

I’m glad it went well and had I been in the country I would most certainly have attended. Can’t say I’d have missed the cold and wet, particularly as it’s about 30C and blue skies where I am at present but that’s the nature of the U.K. I suppose. Oh to be in England now that April’s here etc. If there is going to be another one it’ll go to the top of my list

Hi Glynn, Apologies for not responding earlier (we had to watch MotoGP from Saturday and Sunday) but thank you for organising the Winster weekend. It was lovely meeting new faces and we hope to catch up with some people in June. Amazing how the pub coped with all the different parties having their own "do's" in such a small area. Had a lovely day and evening. Thank you Glynn & all HU attendees.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
