This is an age-old problem, but it shouldn't be. After all, foreign nationals are able to be insured for the purposes of hiring a vehicle on holiday, so there isn't any logical reason why insurance companies are so reticent about adding someone from overseas as a named rider. I had the same problem in 2005, when I wanted to insure an American friend to ride my motorcycle in the UK. The matter resolved itself as he got married and didn't want to risk his new wife on the back of a bike, but not before I had taken the matter up with Simon Weir at Bike Magazine (he is now Editor of Ride).
Simon kindly took it up on my behalf with Norwich Union - my insurers at the time - and his response to me appears on this thread: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...g-europe-74474.
