Insuring a friend from outside Europe on my bike (UK)
 

I would have thought this would be easy.

A friend is visiting from Chile at the end of May. I'd like to let him ride one of my motorbikes.

Carole Nash and Ebike will not let me add a rider with an International License or insure a bike owned by an international rider.

So, how do foreigners get insured when they come over here (UK) ?

Anyone have any links to brokers etc ? I'm coming up short on google.

I think you'll find that the issue is more to do with residency than nationality. I've had similar challenges getting my UK registered Land Rover insured because I am not currently resident in the UK (but I am a UK citizen with a full UK driving licence since 1979). Almost all insurers seem averse to insuring non-residents.

Foreigners taking up residence in the UK would be able to get insurance - but I think they have to get a UK driving licence after a few months.

I looked into the option of registering my vehicle in my brother's name and then being listed as a named driver on his insurance but insurers won't accept me as a named driver due to residency.

I was fortunate in finding one insurer that would provide insurance to me once I satisfied them that the vehicle was kept in a secure location and had security measures in place. But even that insurance came with limited mileage.

You could try 2Gether Insurance - they were the ones who were able to find me the limited mileage cover. They might be able to help.

This is an age-old problem, but it shouldn't be. After all, foreign nationals are able to be insured for the purposes of hiring a vehicle on holiday, so there isn't any logical reason why insurance companies are so reticent about adding someone from overseas as a named rider. I had the same problem in 2005, when I wanted to insure an American friend to ride my motorcycle in the UK. The matter resolved itself as he got married and didn't want to risk his new wife on the back of a bike, but not before I had taken the matter up with Simon Weir at Bike Magazine (he is now Editor of Ride).

Waiting to see if this lot can do something, Index of /englisch , what we need is for him to have 3rd party liability and that should get around it.

Bloody nightmare, Brit InsCos seem to be the worst. I've ridden down the Americas, and RTW. Only Peru and Chile caused issues (Peru just a PITA to find, Chile weirdly could not sell me any for a foreign nike in Chile, but could sell me it for Argentina .... :-) )

I had exactly the same problem... I was the foreigner trying to get listed on a UK registered bike.
I found a broker who cut thru the red tape.
