Hey folks,

In August, I am planning to take a bike with my mate from Berlin to the Caucasus and back to Istanbul. We will be spending about a month buying the bike and doing it up in Berlin (we're ozzies). Got a few questions regarding Berlin:
* Anyone got a few bikes they want to sell capable of the trip?
* What is the best way to look for bikes around Berlin? (I was looking at mobile.de – Gebrauchtwagen und neue Autos – Deutschlands größter Fahrzeugmarkt. at the moment)
* Is there a good reputable and not exorbitant mechanic that anyone knows of?
* Where is the best place to get bike and camp gear in Berlin?
* Any ideas about the best green slip insurer (does it depend on the bike).
* Does anyone know of anywhere that will give foreigners a CDP?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I think you'll only need a CDP for Iran.

What sort of bike are you looking for? Any trip can be done on any type of bike, best to be specific, and to buy two similar styles of bike.

Germany has chain shops for motorcycle gear. Their prices are quite reasonable and they also have camping gear:

* Any ideas about the best green slip insurer (does it depend on the bike).
You need to have a bike insurance. They will also issue the green insurance paper. Make sure that all countries you want to visit are covered.

Please note: You need to be a resident in Germany in order to register your bike. A bike insurance is mandatory for registering.

You might also want to consider to become a member of the German automobile club:

They offer travel aid, help you with spare parts, bike breakdowns etc.

Thankyou OnkelKarle. Regarding registration: I understand that it is possible for a foreigner to get registration (albeit only temporarily) - 12 months.

A CDP is a Carnet De Passage - it's a bond for your vehicle that insures it against the possibility of the government losing customs import tax should you just rock up in there and sell your vehicle illegally.

Relatively open at this stage to most possibilities regarding the bike. We will be travelling on roads even if some could be pretty rough. Only requirement is that it has to be pre-1989 (to do with the import laws in Australia for us to bring it back) - something like an early model Transalp, R65 - the usual suspects. Has to be reliable and the parts fairly easily available.

It is issued by the German Automobile Club (ADAC):

I have not heaered about the possibility of a temporary registration for foreigners. You might want to ask ADAC that as well. They should speak English and a usually pretty helpful.

try these mechanics. i got recommended to them from the transalp group in berlin and thomas there speaks really good english. only used them once for a really small job but nice place & friendly people.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
