Balkans Insurance: Price and Duration for Insurance Purchased at Borders in Balkans

Hello all,

Sharing an update on the prices of motorcycle insurance in the Balkans. We recently travelled through the following countries with a Honda 125 that is registered to Ghana. We decided to purchase insurance at each border (rather than buy a package in advance) since we weren’t sure when we would be entering each country and where, and did want to be constrained by an 30 day window that came along with Balkans-wide insurance available through other brokers.

Overall, we paid € 100 euros for the insurance to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Albania.

So, here is the info:

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Paid $13 for 30 days.

We crossed from Croatia into Bosnia and Herzegovina using the crossing near Gorica in early May 2033. We were able to purchase insurance from Croatia Osigurante about 20 minutes into Bosnia in the town of Grude. Coordinates for the insurance office: 43.36425, 17.41939. There is also a pin on iOverlander for this insurance broker. Able to pay with credit card but very little English is spoken.

Montenegro: €10 for 14 days.

Crossed from Croatia into Montenegro using the Granicnji Prijelaz crossing in late May. Purchased insurance at the office on the second floor of the building on the right side of the road just after crossing into Montenegro. The office is closed on the weekends (so if you arrive over the weekend you are expected to go on the Monday when it reopens). It’s called SOS Manex Spedicija. The coordinates or 42.48105, 18.45594. There is a pin on iOverlander for this. Had to pay with cash.

Kosovo: €10 for 15 days

Crossed into Kosovo from Montenegro using the border crossing in northeast Montenegro near the town of Rozaje, and in western Kosovo close to the town of Peja. The distance between the Montenegro border post and the Kosovo one is very long, maybe 20 minutes in ‘no man’s land’ - which can feel somewhat disconcerting. Kosovan insurance is available at the kiosk on the right side of the road just ahead of the border post itself. The guards instruct you to purchase insurance before entering Kosovo anyway. No pin on iOverlander for this specific kiosk but you cannot miss it when headed into Kosovo from Montenegro along this path (it’s the first building that you come to). Had to pay with euros, not clear if credit card accepted at all. Good level of English spoken.

North Macedonia: €55 for 15 days

Crossed into North Macedonia from Kosovo in late early June through the crossing near Hani I Elezit in southern Kosovo. Purchased insurance at the border from the white building in the middle of the road just beyond the border guard inside North Macedonia. The border guards hold your passport while you go and purchase insurance. Border itself is pinned on iOverlander. Able to pay with credit card. Toilets available but not particularly nice!

Albania: €15 for 15 days

Crossed from North Macedonia into Albania through the crossing near to Struga in North Macedonia, on the northwestern side of Lake Ohrid. Able to purchase insurance for Albania after entering the country from the kiosks on the left side of the road. There are lots of kiosks but only one does motorbikes. Border itself is pinned on iOverlander. Had to pay with cash.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
