Helmet security?
Any advice on how to secure my helmets to the bike when parking for short term? For example we might park and go for dinner for a few hours and cannot easily bring our helmets with us.

Use a wire cable with a loop at each to run through the helmet chin bar and the handlebars. If the cable is about 1.5-2 metres long it can also be used to run up the sleeve of your jacket and leg of your trousers to secure them.

Whilst on this subject you can secure riding boots in the same way if you punch a hole near the top of the boot through which you can thread the cable.

Throw a bike cover over the lot for extra security. I do 1-2 day hikes when traveling and this security system had always worked for me.

Personally I feel that if the helmet is left out in the open on the bike - even cable-tied securely - it's likely that some asshole will try to mess with it. From stealing bits of the liner to a late-night drunk pissing or barfing in it.

My topbox stays empty when I travel, so the helmet, gloves, and tankbag go in there when I am off the bike. Securely locked and out of sight.

That happened to a fellow I know: walked out to his bike about 11pm after meeting his friends in a pub. He hadn't drunk any booze himself as he had to ride home, but he got back to his bike and found someone had taken a wizz in his helmet.

Personally I'd never leave my helmet on the bike for more than a minute. There's always a place to put it, and restaurants are used to it. NEVER had an issue.

When necessary I use the cable method or a combination carabiner. I have a waterproof rolltop bag I can put the helmet in and run the cable inside to keep it waterproof (and make it a little more difficult to barf in...).
