Ortlieb v Wolfman
Hi All,

Going to Ireland end of May for 10 day camping trip on my Triumph SpeedMaster (cruiser). I'm looking at either the Ortlieb motocycle side bag x2 (Ortlieb Waterproof Motorcycle Sidebag)
or the Wolfman Expedition Dry Panniers / Saddle Bags. Looking for something that is waterproof and will last a long time. I like the Ortlieb because it looks easier to add and remove from the brackets whereas the Wolfman takes more time (watched video). What is everyone's opinion on the Ortlieb range of Dry bags, the saddlebags or side bag v the Wolfman range.
I was going to use my 60ltr overboard waterproof duffel bag but it is to wide going across the seat and I'd have to buy a rack for the bike to get it on longways and also concerned about stabilty of the duffel bag compared to saddlebags.

I can't speak from personal experience but I remember reading Walter Colbatch's views that the Ortlieb clips weren't up to the job. Then again he off-roads in Siberia which is obviously more testing. They do of course need a rack to suit them does the Speedmaster have one?

Just to throw an extra spanner in your works Enduristan throw-overs are also worth a look they're similar to the Ortliebs in look but I reckon just that bit sturdier and being throwovers you don't need any rack at all.

That said my first trip was with a well stuffed Overboard 60l roll bag and it was fine and far less wide than my panniers, it just sat on the pillion with as much air squeezed out as possible I found the contents stopped it drooping I bought plain, non elastic webbing straps and just pulled it up tight. It was a nice backrest too.

I own and use both types. Both are definitely well made. The Ortliebs are more waterproof; the Wolfmans get the nod for sturdier build.

I can highly recommend both, so it's really up to aesthetics and price.

not sure how ortleibs are "more" waterproof that wolfmans, but no point in arguing.

i've used the wolfman large expedition bags on my DR for 3 years. after hundreds of river crossings, tens of hours in heavy tropical rain, too many to count falls in dirt, rocks, sand grass, bush, you name it, my wolfmans are rock solid, dry as a crypt and well worth the price paid.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
