Travel Advisory: Honduras roadblocks around the country.

There have been widespread road blockages around Honduras since yesterday. The taxi drivers have organized a protest due to the massive increase in fuel prices over the past year. Additionally, there was a (purportedly) 60% increase in municipal and vehicle registration taxes, and after outrage was only increased by 30%. People are not happy.

Still, you will find many major roads in Honduras around cities and larger towns blocked. Tegucigalpa is a ghost town and I had to slip through a number of blocked roads today just to get to work and back. I have heard that there are a lot of people stuck in San Pedro Sula as well. Predictions are that the blockages are aimed to stop commerce, so the roadblocks will be during the business week, but nothing is certain. I can update as things progress.

Just as a point of reference from today

Continued roadblocks throughout Tegucigalpa, and I imagine other larger cities in Honduras. Cabbies and public transport are blocking all roads around the city.

A good source to hear about traffic in Tegucigalpa is : https://twitter.com/TRAFICOENTEGUS

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
