Off line English to Spanish Translator App..?

Am looking for a speech translation app that works with no data or wifi connection.

I want to be able to speak into my phone and then have it speak back in Spanish.

If found ones that will speak back written text but I want to know if there is a voice version out there (I will pay $$ if it works!).

Thanks in advance.

Google Translate is free, and you can download the languages you want to your phone so it works offline. Been working well for me.

Howdy and thanks for the reply.

My MX riding partner sent me the info about Google Translate yesterday and I excitedly downloaded it only to find it does not do speech off line. It will do text to speech if you type in what you want to say (which is an improvement over previous apps).

I'm looking for one that I can speak English into it and have it speak back to me in Spanish off line.

Perhaps it does not exist yet...?

I have a friend who speaks English into his iPhone and it will translate and speak back the Spanish .
It would do it at roadside but I don't know if that worked without some form of internet connection or if it was all inside his iPhone .

Hi Sjoerd, I'm thinking he had cell/wifi coverage as so far I've not been able to find one (even one that costs $) which will work with voice to voice without a connection.

I did read about an app from the Lonely Planet in an translation App review but it must have been old as when I searched the App store nothing came up for Lonely Planet.

If you happen to find out that it works without a cell/internet connection, please send me a note, thanks!

7-1 Offline Yranslato is an android app that handles 7 languages with spoken word input to written output with speaker option. Works well when online but not too bad offline either. Does multiple words on short sentences, but obviously there is
a limit.

Hi Tony thanks for the follow up.

I did look at that one last night, but my android phone is too old to accept the app :0(

So all I have is my iPhone 4s to use.

Try Yandex.Translate app (Russian version of Google, including translation services).

It works allegedly offline and vocal too... not sure it can do both at the same time, though. which is why I deleted my initial answer.

But as you seem to have no luck so far, if you have time, it is worth a try. Let us know how you get on!

Yandex.map was superb for maps, so the translation App may be worth checking!

cheers,

I have google translate on my phone (android),

I have downloaded my favourite languages (Spanish, German, italian) I think i can download about 6 or 7 (I suppose it's memory dependant)

But I just tried it, set phone to flight mode so all wifi or cell access is turned off, and it translated just fine.

Hi and thanks for responding.

I just repeated my test of google translate on my iPhone 4s, turned off wi FI and put on airplane mode (I don't have a data plan).

Then I touched the micro phone to use voice translate, and again the "not connected to a network so it won't work" error message comes up.

So, are you able to use the microphone translation option when off line?

I'm trying to find an app that will do that off line, but no luck so far, thus your results are interesting.......

SpanishDict App

The best ENG-SPA offline translator for us is the SpanishDict App. Its good for iOS & Android.

It gives a wide range of words & phrases depending on the country and region.

Free on both stores.

I'm not sure why you're having issues with Google Translate offline. I just spoke into mine while in airplane mode and it translated just fine. Are you sure the Spanish language package is downloaded to your phone?

Lonely Planet (RIP)

I bought the Lonely Planet translator several years ago (circa 2008) and it worked very well, even on an old iPhone (4?) Sadly it is no longer available.

You might be having issues with Google Translate because you are using an older iPhone. Just a guess, but I think your hardware is not up to requirements given it is working for others.
