Insurance Recommendations

I am riding from Texas through Mexico and into Guatemala. I see that there are several insurance choices. Anybody have some solid advice...

Can I buy online before I hit the border? Or do I have to buy in-country.

Also wondering about the Mexican TVIP, can I settle that on-line with Banjercito before hand?

I plan on crossing at Laredo, TX. around December 2nd.

I used ACE Seguros through mexadventure.com . It was easy to buy online but I never had to make a claim. The TVIP can be purchased online as well but it seemed like a lot of hassle because they have to mail you the documents. It was easy enough to get at the border. We crossed at eagle pass/ piedras negras. It was a small quiet border with not much traffic. You pretty much just drive through the border and then stop at the main office about 50 miles further down the road for your documents.

Do NOT get TVIP nor FMM online . Those are useless time wasters and needless complexity and extra expenses to add to your worries . They will LOCK you in to having to go to the border if for some unforeseen circumstance you should have to cancel the trip. They would want to see the actual bike before they would cancel the TVIP. and give you back the security deposit. that is , the same as when you leave Mexico back to USA at end of trip.
. Get both MEXICAN TVIP and FMM work done in person AT THE BORDER OR INLAND TERMINAL . ,
These Mexican documents and insurance are of no value in Guatemala or Belize.

The insurance FOR MEXICO on the other hand is very easy and simple to purchase online. But It is eaqually easy to buy it in person when you are in any of the border towns in TEXAS .There are many sources in both situations and it is also sold in Mexico in or adjacent to the border terminal buildings in Matamoros, Reynosa , Nvo Laredo , Ojinaga.

However for GUATEMALA it is different . Liability insurance for tourist visitors is not sold in the the country . It used to be but they stopped doing that years ago . You need to obtain this GUATEMALA SPECIFIC insurance from other sources online . There may be coverage available from things like World Nomads( but I have never dealt with them) .
I have done this by contacting Sanborns Insurance who supply such ONLY from their BROWNSVILLE office . And it is not a simple fast transaction .

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
