DIJ and ferry paperwork in Panama City

Hi all, I decided to get DIJ and ferry ticket from Panama city (same story is also in my fb and blog page)

You can get all things done in Colon, but here are instructions how to get it done in Panama City (reserve one day for this):

- First thing you need to do is to get your bike inspected. You can get it done in N 08°57.998’ W 79°32.697'. Go there in the morning at 8am (red door). They stop doing inspections at 11am. You need to have a copy of your passport, title and Panama customs form.

- After inspection is done you need to wait till around 2pm, before you go to DIJ office in N 08°57.914’ W 79°32.720’. There you can pass long queue, give your driver´s license to the guy in the booth (he will give you a visitor pass), you just tell him “secretario general” or something similar . Go in, give your passport to the front desk and wait. At some point someone will ask you to fill a form (you need to give copies of passport, title, customs form and drivers license) and then you wait some more… Finally, you will get a DIJ document. Without this document you cannot buy ferry ticket (from Ferry Xpress office in Panama and you are not allowed to board the ferry in Colon).

- Now you can ride to Ferry Xpress office in N 08°58.502’ W 79°31.040’. There you need to hand over copies of your passport, title, customs form, DIJ document, driver´s licence and Panama insurance paper (they can make copies there free of charge). Ferry ticket was $279 (with reclining seat). Cash payment only.

I stayed in Voyager International Hostel in N 08°57.230’ W 79°33.317’. It is cheap and close to DIJ.

Does anyone have GPS coordinates for the jetty 2000 in Colon (PaulNomad´s coordinates are going in the middle of the forest, far away)?
Tomorrow (Monday) I will start heading towards Colombia

The other way round

Thanks for all that valuable information. I am travelling in January 2016 so will continue to monitor this forum for updates.

The details of the process from Panama to Columbia looked very helpful. Is there someone who can supply the same information about the process going the other way - from Columbia to Panama.

Thanks

Here are the coordinates still in another format: N9° 21.611' W79° 53.612'
It was pain to find this place without coordinates, but after several u-turns and asking directions I was able to find it.
Every single traveller there (with cars or bikes) had the same problem...

I just wrote a story about the Colon ferry process to my FB and blog page. There are also couple map screen captures for Colon (ferry terminal) and Panama City (Inspection office, DIJ and Ferry Xpress office)

Just a quick note to say all of this information was absolutely correct. Locations, times, etc went off well. Ferry Express does however take credit card payments now. We are booked for Monday and will report back with anything noteworthy.

Thanks for all of the information!

Thanks for this update. Most of the instructions I read are for the southbound leg (Panama to Columbia). Has anyone done it the other way (from Cartegena) who can provide similar instructions on how to get a the bike onto the ferry, out of Columbia and into Panama

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that. Looks like it was a scam after all... Overlandsphere was warning about it in Nov. 15:
