Smile Advice on bying a cheap bike San Jose Costa Rica

Hi I'll be arriving in San Jose end of January and am looking to buy a cheap bike as a run around for about 2 months mabey I'll take it to Guatemala or mexico. I dont mind if it's small ive travels great distances on undersized bikes before as long as its durable
Dose anyone have any hot tips or possitive experiences in the matter.

A used Honda Tornado is a good choice. It was replaced by the XRE300.

Did you buy a bike?

The issue will be you need to register the bike, new or used, in your name, in order to cross borders, needs to be same as Passport. You also need permission to take a CR Plated vehicle, out the country, and must say exact day, and exact return day.

Buying a used bike from another foreigner, with foreign plates, has its issues, as its legally not in your name, for border crossings. If it is in the country illegally, then it will be impounded at checkpoints before the borders, or a police stop, if the paperwork is not in perfect order.

Bike choices are limited, as anything besides a cheap Chinese bike, has a huge import taxes and duties, so they cost twice as much back home...same with cars.

It is also not very safe on a moto in CR, #1 cause of death. Road rules and bad drivers are helter skelter and there are no shoulders and everyone passes and tailgates...

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
