on the paralever models the springs should be mounted inboard of the shoes eg between the bevelbox and the shoes the rearmost spring has the rubber on it and the damper(rubber)flat side faces the shoe and cam and the bevel side faces towards the wheel. It appears you have mounted them out board of the shoes ie like the earlier models set up thus the reason they are jamming up the rear wheel. I think this is what you said you tried to do it is very awkward but can be done - try mounting the springs into the shoes before placing them onto thefront and rearholder and cam you need to use a lever to prise the shoes apart to fit them in place - it is difficult and an extra pair of hands helps also its worth fitting new springs and you need a new rubber anyway - Hope this helps.
