R80G/S rear wheel movement
Just checked the rear wheel movement on an '81 G/S and there's movement in the vertical and horizontal axis - not much but definitely there. Is this wheel bearings? I need to replace the rear tyre so I guess I could change the wheel bearings then if that's what it is.

Can't be much other than the bearings. But the "wheel" bearings are in the rear drive housing - and one of them is about 4-5" in diameter.
I'd recommend getting a good shop to do the replacement as I believe the diff needs to be reshimmed. You CAN do it yourself but beware; it's not a simple task and you need a collection of the right shims.

My K has been failed MOTs for rear wheel play by non BM workshops and then same day had an MOT issued by BM dealers .
I was told , they all do that when they`re cold guv .
After 200,000 km it got really sloppy and I changed the final drive before the wheel fell off .

Hi, probably a bit late with this one but there should be some movement at the rear wheel on a mono lever G/S when it is cold, the amount allowed is in your manual, I managed to get 150 pounds knocked off the price of my bike as it was loose, still is the same now with an extra 15,000 miles on it, you need a dial gauge to check correctly but I guess by now you will have spent out on it, sorry I didn't get in touch sooner but I'm on the road and don't get the luxury of surfing now.

Thanks for the replies all, as it happened, the main oil seal went. So I had Motorworks replace that and the bearings at the same time. £170 I think it cost. I'd recommend Motorworks btw.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
