OK, Shims, these are small discs of hardened metal in VERY specific, machined sizes, that fit between the 'bucket' and the Camlobe on your BMW. if you put a thick one in say 0.12mm it decreases the gap and a thinner one, say a 0.10mm increases the gap. on older bikes the gap on the valve adjustment was done with a setscrew & Nut.
special tools are (usually) needed to fit these.
It is not a job for a 'greasy spanner' mechanic.
