Handlebar risers
Hi, I bought handlebar risers from Wunderlich. And their fitting instructions say:
For BMW motorcycles this value is usually 21-22 NM(15-16 ft/lb) for 8 mm bolts.
But I also have a Haynes service and repair manual and that books says nothing about torque settings. Do I need a torque wrench for this or can I just thighten these bolts by hand (feeling).
Thnx

Most torque wrenches are woefully inacurate and are only used so you can blame something else when the threads strip. 22 Nm is there so the factory can't send them out loose, its the engineering equivalent of "some".
Unless you plan on rebuilding the motor next week and/or can afford a £200 wrench and calibration stuff to go with it, do it by feel. If it isn't tight enough they'll move when you swing on them, you don't need a gauge to tell you that.
Andy
Edit to add: if it worries you put a pen mark from the bars onto the riser and across the bolt head so you can see if they move.

HI when you fit your risers put the top clamp on and lightly tighten each bolt try to keep an even gap front and back doing each bolt up a little tighter as you go then you wont put excessive strain on any one corner or side .ROB

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
