airhead alternator
I have replaced on my '91 GS as follows-
1. the rotor (original went open circuit)
2. diode board (1 diode went open circuit - it doesn't charge)
3. dodgy brushes once
4. dirty slip rings
5. 2 blown charging bulbs (never noticed either until the battery went flat. The engine starts to mis-fire, RPM indications all over the place and it then dead cuts)
When I save up, I'll get the permanent magnet type alternator. FYI, most big aircraft use permanent magnet generators (PMG's) as a final, ultimate, my God the battery's flat, power supply for the engine electronics. It's because they always work.
