1981 R80G/S for Sale in Seattle

1st year, low production number R80G/S... 131st of the line for the US market

Sorry for the stupidly long add here...

While I said I would never do this, things have changed and as I haven't ridden my G/S in 2019 it feels like it is time to hand it off to the next custodian who will RIDE the G/S. I hate to have bikes sit.

The real plan is wait until spring, bring out the G/S, detail it, service it, and put some miles on it then sell. This is the fall "take it as it is price". Yes, I know it is high, no I do not need to sell, and if you are offended by the price, no need to comment just look away. I would consider a part trade (trade?) for a /2 or /2 conversion or project... and a project would be better than a ready to go bike. If the /2 was white that would be ideal.

The buy it now, fall, as it sits, with all the spare price is $11,750 Once again, if you are offended, simply look away.

At the bottom there is a list of all the spares that are included as well - stock front end, stock exhaust, small tank in nice shape, etc., etc. etc.. Here is a link to the abbreviated sales listing gallery LINK

Here is a link to the complete picture gallery The Heinrich tank is long gone LINK

I'll be building a gallery that contains the relevant photos pretty soon, then will remove the link to the larger gallery with lots of photo you may not really have interest in.

Here's my much too long write up, below you can go to the thread detailing everything since the day I picked the G/S up.. just hit the link for "I sold my GS..." LINK

1981 R80G/S – Very early production, 131st US model built

Known history:

I first became aware of this particular G/S in early 2007 after sending out a “WTB-G/S” email out to my local BMW web ring. The bike was owed by a local (J.K.), who had it stored in his renal property’s garage in Bremerton, WA. He had purchased the bike in 1999 from the second owner in Denver CO, and ridden it home. He has a number of other bikes (including a supposedly San Jose built R90 based HPN Dakar racer copy) parked this one and did not put on many miles. After selling my R100GS, I purchased the bike February 21st, 2008.

The two most compelling reasons (to me at least) that I pursued this particular G/S were that is had been in a sense abandoned in that Bremerton garage, and that is had an indicated 19,019 miles. Subsequently I was able to track down the PPO (B.C.) who I spoke with and confirmed he had purchased the bike at ~14K miles from the original owner who had used it as a Forest Service road bike around Denver since buying it. He purchased is around 1995, rehabbed it and sold it (at a loss he said) to J.K. in 1999. I spoke with Denver BMW who was able to confirm B.C.’s ownership and provide a maintenance receipt.

One note about the mileage – When I took the cockpit/headlight enclosure apart to install the Eastern Beaver relay kit I noticed the Speedometer was marked in sharpie with the PPO’s last name… typically I have seen this done when speedometers are rebuilt. I called San Jose Speedometer who used to be the go-to guys to rebuild BMW instruments and they did not have any old records. This means that while the PO and PPO confirm the mileage is correct, I can’t say for certain that it is. Just thought you should know…

Here is a link (within tons of pictures) that document my ownership of this great early production R80G/S

· Full Disclosure and things I would address section (read through my linked thread for all the details on everything…)

o While the compression is excellent, there is evidence that something rattled around in the left cylinder denting the head and damaging the cylinder lining to some extent. This hasn’t affected compression, I don’t see any tell-tale blue smoke upon startup or during operation and haven’t had to add oil between oil changes
§ Spare “B” sized pistons and barrels included
o When installing the Happy Trails panniers I inadvertently mounted the left box in the wrong position. When remounting I had to drill two new holes. The “spare” holes have been filled with JB Weld and have been no issue for the past few years
o Rear rim does have a slight bend, in the 4K+ miles I have put on this bike, I have not been able to detect any vibrations caused by the bend.
