Transalp xl600v 1996, broken rear wheel hub, melbourne
Hi guys,

I was cruising the Great Ocean Road on my way from Melbourne to Perth as the last leg of my England to Australia trip when I broke the rear wheel hub and bearing on my 1996 Honda Transalp 600. Go figure, she's survived the Alps, deserts, the Himalayas, India, then decides to break on a perfect Aussie road. I guess i missed the gradual wearing down of the bearing due to ear plugs and being rainy and windy the last few hundred k's riding. By the time I actually heard the grinding through all the noise a fair bit of damage had already been done, eventually let go completely, taking chunks from the hub, refer picture. I limped it back to Melbourne and left her at a workshop in Brunswick.

I don't think the hub can be repaired and I don't think post 90's Transalps were domestic models in Australia. Does anyone know of any 1990-96 model transalp 600s that have been wrecked in melbourne/VIC/Australia? If not, I fear my trip is prematurely over and my beloved bike is off to the wreckers herself...

Bummer, the type of failure we all dread. Can't help with a source of a new wheel in Australia.

When I had a similar failure, to minimise freight cost, I had the hub only shipped from overseas wrecker, then rebuilt wheel with existing rim, spokes and disc (rebuilding wheel was easier than I expected, lots of on line info available).

might be worth checking bike wreckers around the globe and seeing if you can get one posted over?

Kenny, I'm not far from Brunswick. If you want, you can call me on 0410 470 632.

I'm pretty sure you should be able to find a replacement wheel in Melbourne as I doubt very much if your rear wheel is unique to just an XL600V.

I think it shares the same hubb with the RD03 (1989 Africa Twin 650) but try finding one of them in Aussie, let alone a breakers yard.

Your going to need to get one in from Europe.

EDIT: put a shout out on XRV.org.uk they have Aussie members on there who may have what your looking for.

Hi guys, had a windfall

Mechanic reported that aside from the obvious damage to the outer part of the hub, he thinks its still serviceable. Looks like the outer race remained intact and saved the hub from severe damage, so I am super lucky on that count. Not tested to lab spec, but he's confident after cleaning up all the mess, deburring some bits, inspecting, installing new bearings, that its still good to go. New bearings fit snugly, no play in the rear wheel or catching in the bearing, test rides fine. He said the dust seal may shift, but the bearings are sealed units, so they'll be ok, just keep an eye on it. Just picked her up then, riding through the city and on the motorway and feels fine. Mechanic said he wouldn't give it the all clear unless he was absolutely sure it was safe to ride on.

So with all that being said, I'm feeling confident in finishing off the last 4000km to perth and bringing this journey to a conclusion. My sincerest gratitude to everyone for your help during this uncertain time, a phenomenon I have experienced across the world. Plus, I learned more about motorcycles, which is never a bad thing.
