Carnet

Does anyone know what's going on about getting a Carnet from North America to visit Aussie land.

Carnets are organised in your home country. You'll need to ask someone in Canada that knows. Try your equivalent of our AA.

Cheers

I know the USA did not issue them and people had to get them in Canada, BUT recently I heard a rumor that Canada is no longer issuing them (this may be false check it out.) Nigel is right you have to contact them. Aus gov backs me on the former anyway:

"a Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) issued by the motoring association in your home country (or in Canada if you are from the United States of America). Australian Customs and Border Protection Service has more information about carnets and temporary imports."

The Aussie gov is strict about this they will not let you in with out one (and only permanent residence can fully import) and there is no alternative. Also remember to make is surgically sterile clean. Huge fees if they have to clean it..

https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicl...ns/carnet.aspx

https://www.border.gov.au/Importinga...ervehicles.pdf

I have also recently spoken with NZ customs, and their Temporary import permit is no longer acceptable for a bike (as of last week's phone call)

I know how to get a Carnet. The problem is CAA no longer does them for North America. Has anyone heard Who & When a new contract will be signed?

Have you contacted Suzanne? In the link I gave above.

Or should I duplicate it here ?

Ok then ...
" The CAA operation will close on March 31, 2015. New clients will be obliged to wait for a European based centralized issuing department expected in the third quarter of 2015.

For clients already travelling, for you nothing will change. Your file will be kept open until your current expired carnet is received back at CAA National and discharged.

Existing clients must understand that CAA will not be able to issue another carnet once your current one expires.

Should you have any questions or concerns please direct them to Suzanne Danis at CAA National."

We here at HU are optimistic that this will end up as an improvement in costs, though probably not in speed and expedience! Suzanne has done a fantastic job for many years for a great many travellers, and we wish her well in whatever the future holds.
"

The instruction is clear .. contact Suzanne. NOTE! the copy and paste has not brought over the link for Suzannes' contact details .. you will still have to go to the linked page above and find it ...
Maybe she has moved on ... ? If that is the case, what do the CAA say now?

I've had prior contact/correspondence with Suzanne Denis at CAA (earlier this year?) and she directed me to a general listing of other international Carnet issuing agencies. One that I tried was in Australia - and they only service Aussie citizens.

This thread - my post down the page - might be of interest.

I've been looking into other Carnet resources for NA citizens as well..

Overlandsphere facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/OverlandSphere/ also has info on where carnets are up to. ADAC seems to be a front runner in Europe and since there is no issuer in N America, you should be able to deal with any other issuer who will talk to you

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
