Annual Travel Insurance Policy for Australian Motorcyclists for world travel

Has anyone found an annual travel insurance policy that will cover Australians riding 800cc bikes worldwide? Can only find 1 company currently and the cost is exorbitant - over $5,000 for a couple for 12 months for full comprehensive cover. Any contacts for insurers appreciated!

Apologies, I just checked my Medibank policy and is only up to 250cc. I do remember finding one that covered big bikes if you have owned and registered in Aus for previous two years. Cannot remember who but will update if and when I find.

Trawl through this lot. https://www.comparetravelinsurance.c...rbike-holidays There are a number of options. Others are now obsolete. We ended up with insureandgo. We ended up paying about $1800 for 3 months. Bloody ridiculous. But we are now in our 60's and it included the USA, which always bumps up the cost.

Worldnomads is now offering policies for Au residents again and it is possible to add a sports and activities cover which covers on & off Rd motorcycling. No mention of bike size only must have appropriate licence.

That sounds pretty normal to me, cheap if you're expecting to cover the US.

Sounds like a lot to me. I pay £250 a year, including USA, for myself and Mrs Berin, both British. For some reason the Aussies seem to pay a lot more.

I'd guess there are a wide variety of definitions of "travel insurance" embedded in this thread.

My "travel insurance" covers unreimbursed cancelled tours, flights, lodgings, and that sort of thing. It doesn't have anything to do with 1)medical expenses, 2)medical evacuation, or 3)vehicle insurance of any sort. I collected on it once when I needed emergency surgery just before a trip, and one airline plus a rental agency declined to refund my pre-payments. This insurance costs me a couple of hundred USD per year.

Medical insurance is something else again. Medical insurance which will cover treatments throughout the world, provide phone consultation with experts, and will also fly me home if necessary is a nice thing to have, though I've never used it. Some such policies exclude certain activities, including riding motorbikes of a certain size or away from certain kinds of roadways. Mine is cobbled together from a number of sources, and it costs several thousand USD per year. It was much more expensive before I aged into our federal Medicare program.

And then there's vehicle insurance, which ranges from minimal to extravagant in coverages and expense. Here, the general approach is to cover any damage to people or property you might be responsible for in an accident, and perhaps to repair or replace your vehicle as well. Truly luxurious policies will cover theft, glass breakage, and all sorts of other stuff...for a price.

I'm thinking that the gulf between £250 and AUD $5000 per year is probably a case of failing to compare apples with apples. Of course, I'm perfectly willing to be told I'm wrong about that.

My “travel” insurance covers holiday cancellation, lost passport, missing the flight etc.

It also covers medical treatment up to $2m including repatriation. The cover is via Marks and Spencer and includes motorcycle cover.

I’ve had to claim once for medical expenses after a cave diving incident in the US. The bill for the helicopter evacuation, various ambulances, some police time, a field of some farm crop, 3 days in the pot and 5 days in ICU, and repatriation was about $300k.

In the UK pretty much all travel insurance covers medical but obviously there are exclusions for motorbikes, size of bike, scuba, skiing etc so read the small print.

Medical evacuation is different. Travel insurance, at least that generally sold in the UK picks up the costs of your treatment but it doesn’t provide any evacuation services, meaning you rely on the emergency services available in country.

That’s fine in places where they exist like most of Western Europe and the US, but not where they don’t, for example Albania.

When travelling to places where local emergency services are sketchy I take out cover with Global Rescue or Control Risks, who will provide the rescue service or hire a local contractor. Global Rescue is about £600 per year for medical evacuation services.

Hi aandloz, was wondering if you found an Australian travel insurance provider? Im planning to head overseas from Australia in a few months myself.
