5wk trip from Brisbane

Got 5 weeks off in Aug / Sep and looking to do a big ride starting and ending in Brisbane.

I am looking for route suggestions that would fit that timeframe.

Two riders:
AfricaTwin and F650gs
Competent off road
Looking for off the beaten path rather than just bitumen the whole way.

Thanks in advance

Barry

We did a couple of weeks in August through Longreach (original home of Qantas), Winton (location of the only known example of fossilized dinosaur stampede footprints), up to the Gulf of Carpentaria, down through Birdsville, and through Currawinya NP - great country, and a mix of dirt and asphalt. Highly recommended.

Many years ago, I started off from Sydney on a BMW F650, and rode up the coast through Byron Bay to Townsville, then took the highway through the interior to Alice Springs, Uluru, Kings Canyon, and down to the south coast for a ride back through the Great Ocean Road. Terrific trip over about 4 weeks. Plenty of see and do.

A couple of thoughts:

1) get away from the coast and work your way north through the forests and highlands, exploring places like Carnarvon Gorge, Blencoe Falls, Atherton Highlands, then back along the coast - not rally a lot of "offroad" but could be a good trip, if you stay off the main highways.

2) Birdsville and back - one road west and another east. Still a fair amount of highway but once again, take "excursions" from the main roads to explore.

I'd suggest maybe in those months avoiding Victoria for the weather.

----------------
Brisbane - Birdsville - Alice Springs (and surrounds) - Tanami - Halls Gap - Brisbane. Around 9000Kms total, and a variety of desert and plenty of stuff to see.
----------------
Another option:
Brisbane - Diamantina Lakes - Cloncurry - Cape York - Brisbane.
Around 7000Km total. with a mix of desert and coastal regions.
----------------

5 weeks is a fairly decent time to explore some country, obviously this all depends on the COVID conditions at the time. I'd consider the 2nd route, as it means staying within QLD, and restrictions are less likely to affect you. They aren't issuing passes into the aboriginal areas atm, due to COVID, but in a few months. Who knows?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
