UK - Siberia - Mongolia with children

5-years ago we took our 41-year old Forward Control Landrover and our two young children on an overland trip from the UK to Mongolia. With limited planning we successfully navigated our way to the Gobi desert in one of the hottest summers in recent history. I will post a video of this trip next month in a reply to the thread (I can't right now as I'm in China without a VPN and YouTube is blocked).

Top Tip:

The best thing we did was paint our Landy of children holding hands all round the vehicle - bright, colourful and fun. We believe this helped us through certain possible difficult customs (Russia/Mongolia) and was a great talking point with locals and travellers alike wherever we went.

Next:

We are currently planning another overland trip with Children, this time a baby and we will go further than Mongolia down to South East Asia and then West through India/Pakistan/Iran and back to Europe.

Questions:

The two things that I have had mixed reports about are:

1) Carnet. RAC in the UK no longer do them. I have heard that ADAC in Germany do. Does anyone have any experience of this and can give a few tips?
2) Narcotic Gas robberies. I have toured motorbikes and 4x4's throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia and have never ever had any personal experience of this but have read a few scare stories recently of gas robberies (particularly in Italy and other parts of Europe). Does anyone have ANY experience or advice regarding this?

I/We look forward to meeting some of you.

Peace, Andy

Thanks Ted, appreciate the feedback - tried not to sugar coat it. Looking forward to the next trip. One thing I have learned is to have a dash cam running to pick up more of the 'stuff' happening outside. Peace to you.

I went on a trip with Alpine Rovers in July 2017. They have a dormobile landy. On the way through France they were robbed one night and had money etc stolen. So Someone broke into a locked vehicle without waking them or the dog. The dog was off colour for several days.

The suspicion is this was a gas robbery

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
