vehicle insurance morocco

Hi all,
I'm heading off to morocco mid March and suddenly realised my insurance won't cover me while I'm there, nor are they prepared to extend cover. Does anyone know an insurer who will give short term cover for Morocco?

Hi Old Bear:

Welcome to the HUBB forum community.

You can easily buy insurance for Morocco when you get off the ferry at Tanger Med port. It's totally trouble-free, and about as difficult as going through a McDonald's drive-thru.

Basically, you get off the ferry, ride down the internal port roadway until you come to customs & immigration, at that point you park your motorcycle in the parking lot, walk a very short distance to the plaza where the insurance vendors are, and you buy your policy there. It will cost you about US $90 for a month for a motorcycle.

Ignore the touts (all the 'helpers'), just walk up to the insurance booth and do your business. They all charge the same price, no point shopping around.

Do bring your proof of ownership and proof of licencing of the motorcycle with you, along with your passport. The insurance vendors take major credit cards.

Once you have the insurance document, you go back to customs & immigration, wave it at them, and they then wave you on your way.

I've done this several times, never had any kind of problem or delay at all.

Michael

PS: While you are at the plaza where you buy insurance, you will find some ATMs - might as well take out some local money from the ATMs while you are there. The Moroccan ATMs charge a small fee (about $2) per transaction, so it is better to take large amounts of money out in order to minimize the number of transactions you have to make.

morocco insurance

Thanks Michael,
I'm actually landing at Nador in the evening. Have you ever been there? It never seems to be mentioned and I wonder if its as well set up.

Hi Old Bear:

I've visited Nador, but never embarked or disembarked from a ferry there.

I'm going to make an educated guess that no matter what time your ferry arrives, even if it is 3:00 AM, you will find the insurance booth at the port open. My rationale is as follows: the insurance booth's only customers are people who arrive on the ferry (it's not like Moroccan residents go to the port to buy insurance), hence, the booth is likely manned during ferry arrivals, and closed the rest of the time when no ferries are expected.

Motorcycles "usually" get offloaded first from ferries, maybe after the big trucks but generally before all the cars, so once you ride off the boat, find out where the insurance booth is and go there without undue delay.

I have always found the Moroccan customs and immigration officials at the ferry ports to be very courteous and helpful people - let them know you need to buy insurance, and they will point you in the right direction.

Michael

For a while it was only available in town or not at all, so I avoided Nador and used easy Tan Med.
Now it seems it's available again at the port: €90 a month.

And to add information about Tanger Ville, once you've finished with police and customs controls, park up your bike on the right and enter the building on your right, there's an insurance booth in the wood panelled area. If you want to withdraw cash there's a van-ATM on the right near the exit of the port. Never seen one before, the ATM is actually mounted on the side of the van.

Does the vehicle insurance that you can purchase at Tangier Med have any value (apart from as a certificate)? If my bike is stolen can I claim? If I damage the bike will the insurance cover the damage?
Thanks,

It's TPO in case you run someone over Tim, a minimal legal requirement to use the roads in Morocco, as in most countries.
No comp coverage, unless you organise it in your home country, which in the UK few do due to £££.
I believe the regular insurance from some EU countries is valid beyond TPO in Morocco or 'Mediterranean' countries.
