Reasons for investing in a latrine.
Fantastic. There's clearly been a big effort put in to this product.

Also taken from the sales material...

"According to a study conducted at the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, there are numerous incentives for investing in a toilet. Below are the most highly ranked factors according to the study’s respondents for investing in a latrine".


1. Avoid the discomfort of the bush
2. Gain prestige from visitors
3. Avoid dangers at night
4. Avoid snakes
5. Reduce flies in compound
6. Avoid smelling/seeing faeces in bush
7. Protect my faeces from enemies
8. Have more privacy to defecate
9. Keep my house/property clean
10. Feel safer
11. Save time
12. Make the house more comfortable
13. Reduce my household’s healthcare costs
14. Have more privacy for household affairs
15. Make my life more modern
16. Feel royal
17. Make it easier in old age/sickness
18. For improving health
19. Being able to increase my tenants’ rent

I wonder what other reasons there could be for investing in a latrine?

It could be considered crass finding humour in what looks like a very good product for people living in areas of poor sanitation, but the marketing guys do seem to be suffering from, dare I say it, verbal diarrhoea!

If you're parked up in urban areas etc. an inside loo helps keep a low profile.
I remember camping at Third Bridge in the Okavango Delta in 1993. we had a rooftop tent, but I had diarrhea. Walking to the toilet block in pitch darkness with lions roaring in the bushes...several times that night.

Thanks very much lovely fellow travellers and loo-goers for your advice! We are now officially "on the road" and decided to dump the Thetford (no pun intended) and take a small gardener's trowel instead, courtesy of my Grandma. Bless her, she's 90 on Monday - I don't think she really realised why I asked her for one.

Another tip for any lady travellers out there: get yourself a shewee!

Don't encourage them, Rosie. Someone on this board - who will remain anonymous unless she wants to post a photo - decided to demonstrate her shewee last night by peeing on our campfire... and the sweetcorn in it!

the whizz ladies pee device does the same as the sheewee and even has it's own little bag to keep it in.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
