Best place to sell South African Car

Hi,

Me and my girlfriend want to overland Africa from Cape Town to Cairo via the eastern route in early 2018. We are still at an early stage of planning and this forum already helped us a lot.

Since we are travelling on a tight budget I am trying to find out a cheap way to do the trip. So far we want to buy an already kitted out vehicle in South Africa and then drive it to Egypt, or if possible even to our home country Austria.

The biggest question for me is where to sell the car to get the most money back for it. I think I have three options:

1) Driving to Egypt and selling it there

2) Driving to Egypt, shipping the car to Greece and selling the car in Europe, maybe UK

3) Do a round trip, avoiding Sudan and Egypt and driving back the car to South Africa.

What do you think is the best option? Or does one of you have another option?

Thanks already for your help!!!

Best regards,

Dominik

Hi Dominik,

Well a quick answer of the easiest place to sell a SA car, is in SA.

Egypt you have a to have a carne so selling would be very difficult, if it's possible at all.
You could potentially sell it to other travelers who want to do you trip in reverse, but then you have the carne and registration issue as well.

I bought an SA registered Bike in Ghana of an SA guy and rode it down to South Africa and sold it in SA without any issues, the registration stayed in his name and I have a letter giving permission for me to ride it over borders. But I had no Carne, so I didn't have that headache.

Other options are importing the car into a country and selling it locally, but that would usually incur a heavy import charge.

A round trip is probably lowest risk

Not sure how much help that was, but maybe some food for thought.

Thank you for your answer!

I'm still researching on how to do it, but if somehow possible i want to drive from South Africa to Cairo and not do a round trip. This has always been my dream and I want to fullfill it.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get an carnet from the german ADAC for

a) an EU-registred
b) UK-registred
c) South-Africa-registred

car without having to go to Munich? Can I just send them the paperwork by E-Mail and get the carnet by mail?

Or is it a better idea to get the carnet for above vehicles from the AA in South Africa?

Thank you for your help!

If you are on a low budget as you say, the best way would be to buy a car in Europe and drive it down to CT while cars are twice as expensive in CT it doesn't make sence at all to take the car all the way from CT to Europe.
