Kenya - Greece - Uk Via everywhere. in a LR SIII

Hey all,

I've been reading this forum for ages, the best place that really connects overlanders across the globe.

I live in Kenya and am planning a 3 month safari - round Europe!

I am in need of some good advice.

So far I have a few vehicles to choose from:
Landcruiser 40 series pickup (HJ45) This is my preferred car but not sure i can get spares.... Thoughts?
Landcrusier 70 series SWB
Land Rover Series 3 88''

Current plan is to use the LR just because 1. its iconic 2. its easy to get parts for 3. the pick up is huge and may cost $$$$$$ to ship.

Also just bought my eezi awn tent for our accommodation.

But heres the issue(s):
- shipping from kenya to greece is 2500 GBP from the quotes i got so far as there is no direct ship i can find, other possible ports like istanbul are the same
- RORO to UK only 750GBP
- Driving any of the above vehicles across europe... I guess i will need a carnate for every country?
- I wonder if it would just be cheaper to buy a car in the UK to take advantage of the EU. <--- no fun as I cant spend months making the perfect overlander.

Anyway lots of to come, we leave in 6 months so plenty of time to work it out.

Any experience opinions etc?

Ed

Hi Ed, you don't seem to be getting much response here...even I just came across it. How is the planning going? Did you go with the Series III? I am sure your research has progressed. I don't think you would need a carnet for Europe. I am interested as one of my potential plans is to ship my truck from UK down to Cape Town, drive up as far as Kenya and then ship it back. I have seen that Mombasa to UK is pretty steep. Curious how you are getting on...

you would be better off driving round europe in a van or moho , as using any 4wd in europe is a sledgehammer to crack a walnut , unless you are thinking of winter and snow , even then a series land rover would not be the best from a warmth etc pov. have a look on mobile .de or ebay uk to see what is available. Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
