Royal Enfield Classic 500 CC

Trouble Shooting for ride to Leh & Ladakh ( High Altitudes )

Bike is smoking – White Smoke

Check for oil level in the gauge. If oil is less, then possibility of Oil Ring having shifted. Bike will move, you will have to keep topping it with oil after 100 kms and clean the spark plugs

Once you are closer to a Royal Enfield Dealership, please show the bike for repairs.. Also if riding at a very high and constant RPM could result in damage to the rings at these altitudes

Bike stops while running – All systems go dead

Open battery and check for loose connections. Open head light cover and you will find the “ brains of the bike “ check for loose connection in the ignition switch. Make ignition direct by disconnecting ignition switch. Disconnect the tail light connection switch. Check condenser point under the seat.

On turning the key on, the ignition switch comes on and goes off

Ignition switch is loose or carbon deposit on connecting points. Spray with WD 40 or equivalent spray, or put a few drops of petrol and try to switch on again.

All systems functioning, engine cranking but no start

Open fuel pipe and see if fuel supply is on. May be tank is empty or may be impurities have chocked the fuel filter. Blow into the pipe, or give air pressure from foot pump.

Check air filter for dust deposits & Check spark plugs

Gears disengage frequently

Check if your foot is touching gear shift lever from heel. When hitting a bump foot does shift from the foot rest and hit the lever and gear disengages. OR, clutch cable needs to be adjusted for play

Engine Knocking after 2nd gear

Check and clean spark plugs. Use only platinum spark plugs.

Always ensure green light ( neutral ) is on before you crank the engine. Bike will not start if green light is not glowing.

Bike stalls every time you press the brake, horn or switch on the lights.

This happens as the cable connecting the tail lights to the rest of the circuitry passes under the rear-mud guard. Due to weight and bumpy roads, the rear tire rubs or touches the cable, and due to friction, the insulation and covering of the wire gives way, exposing the naked wire which touches the metal surface, causing earthing and blowing out the fuses.

Remove the rear wheel and check the cable for fractures/friction burn marks/bareness.
