Help!!

Snapped the lower bolt on brake caliper(front) on 86 ivj with half the bolt stuck in caliper still .Any ideas as to getting it out??Wasnt that heavy handed and just seemed to snap.Thanks

is it flush with the face of the calliper if it is and you have mig welding facilities you could build it up with weld and then weld a nut on let it cool soak with wd40 or similar and try to undo it. this method has got me out of trouble a few times especially bolts in alloy as the heat really helps free things but if not the only thing i can suggest is drilling it out carefully. Buy a set of easy outs. These are like a tapered tap but with a reverse thread ie you turn them left to tighten them. They are available from any tool shop or halfords. You simply drill a hole in the remains of the bolt and tighten it into the drilled hole, as you tighten it the stud will be unscrewing. I work on aircraft and use them all the time to get out broken screws and bolts. If its tight in the hole just soak it in WD40 first or apply a little heat. You are less likely to damage the thread in the calliper than trying to drill it out or welding a bolt to it.

I have used easy outs before too but have also had some bad quality ones that have snapped easy and once you snap these they are so hard you can have some real problems so if you do go for the easyout option take it really easy and keep heating/soaking them i havent had any trouble with the welding route and havent damage the thread before but you do have to be really acurate. goodluck

oh and with a caliper you dont want to heat it too much because of the seals weld would heat just that small area
