I don't know the Serrow either, but if it's anything like the 600's it would also be worth checking the carb to head stubs.
On XT600's they are a 2 piece construction, part rubber & part metal which with age seperate and allow air leaks which can get worse as the engine heats up.
Coincidently,I was searching the net the other day and came across a very good "common Serrow faults" page which would be worth searching out, sorry I can't remember the address
