Gearbox rumbles

I've been riding my 1994 600e for aound 4 months now and I'm sure it's getting louder. Got a deep whining noise coming from the transmission which goes when you pull in the clutch lever. The bike generally feels harsher through the rev range but there is no loss in power. It's done about 35k km now.

Any ideas?

in which gear do you recognize the noise?
in the worst case pitting of gears is the reason. if so, you have to overhaul the gearbox, which is really the worst case for XT600 because to do this you have to dismount the whole engine.

The noise is definitely transmission. It starts at around 30kph as a whine, like tyre noise ( could be? running Avon Distanzia which are road oriented so probably not) It's not the wheel bearings as I changed those recently. It's there all the time in any gear and does not change pitch with gear selection. Still there clutch in or out. Seems to vibrate a little more than usual.

Wondered if it could be output shaft bearing? Any ideas?

if you rec the noise in any gear, i don't think pitting of gears is the reason.

- drive chain
- tyre
- bearings

Hai,

Try to remember when it started...Did you change anything just before that?
New bearings are no garanty, they can wear out in a few hunderd Km if fitted wrong or dirty.

Most importand is: Did you hange anything just before it started?
To rule out the tire's, drive a while on sand, is the noise still there?

Thanks for the input.

Could it be tyres? Been on a while now and I'm sure I would have noticed before and with the ones I'm running, I wouldn't like to take them too far off road.

I'm thinking along the lines of transmission, either chain or output shaft bearing? Could the chain make that much noise??
