Actually....and I am going to be flamed for this... These smaller 4str bikes are much better suited to this provided 1) dont load it to it's max. 2) dont try and ride it at highway speeds all day or treat it like it was a large DS.
Why?
They aren't nearly as taxing to ride when the going gets rough
they are economical
with exception aren't over-tuned and have high tolerences so can sustain quite a lot of abuse, (take a look at compression at only 8.7:1)
In day to day african riding will be as quick as a larger bike
want proof.
look at what the locals ride.
Downside:
They do not have great range between fuel stops. In fact it's pretty poor unless you change from the supplied 10L tanks
