struggle starting

Hi guys. Xt600e 92. 26k. Starting takes ages and while trying it bangs a few times..twice its ran the battery flat. What could be wrong...left it a half hour then tried it again..it started no trouble at all. Took it a couple o miles. But i have it on trickle charge just now...it has a loud can on it. Could the backfire be because of the loud can..ive ran it with the can on it before. But till yesterday the bike had laid up 6 weeks..any thoughts

Could be dirty carb. Pilot jet clogged. Could be air screw. Could be gas tank cap clogged.
Is the choke is on?
If it's cold out turn the bike on and just let it sit. The battery will warm up (if newer lith ion) starting becomes easier.
Old gas?

I have a simmilar problem. What connections did you clean?

I also rebuilt the starter and I still have to clean and check the carb. The problem with starting was only if I let it sit for a few weeks.

Just took the seat and tank off. Undone all connectors. Scraped an cleaned..now starts first button.hope its good fur you

Important to drain carb if you let it sit for weeks, turn fuel off and let it run til it stops.

So, as I posted few weeks ago, it now starts almoast immediatly. But it now cuts out after about 2-3 seconds. It does this 2 or 3 times and then once it warms up just a litlle bit, runs ok. Its not a huge problem, but would still like to fix it. I already cleaned the carb, with al filters inside, everything looks ok...

You may have a fuel screw adjustment needed. Fuel screw is on primary carb, right at front of carb underneath. Take a short screwdriver, turn in clockwise counting turns and part turns. DO NOT TIGHTEN, just until it seats, then turn back about 1.5 turns. This is a starting place. With a fuel screw, when you turn it out, you are richening the mixture.

With engine warm and idling properly, adjust fuel screw in or out for highest rpm. This will be the leanest setting for your altitude. Remember your initial fuel screw setting so you can return it there if needed. I have seen an increase of several hundred RPM's. Reset idle speed to normal after setting fuel screw.
