from nz to australia - shipping and rego

the situation: in market for new bike + always wanted to do nz on a bike
the thought: great opportunity to buy bike in nz, ride it round, ship it back to oz.
the advantage: do nz on own bike + only pay one way shipping.
the challenge: bureaucracy.
the challenge expanded:
a) registering bike in nz in own name.
b) registering a newzealander moto in Australia once shipped.

question is has anyone done this and if so what is the process / hurdles. i have emailed both nz and aus appropriate authorities requesting info to no avail. i am yet to underestimate the incompetence and inefficiencies associated with a governing organization. my own web research does not assist.

any advice would be much appreciated. i am sure there'd be someone out there who has had similar thoughts. many thanks in advance

Forget it!

Too much money will be spent + time + paperwork to make up for the cost of one way shipping.

If you want to avoid the costs of shipping ... hire or buy there and resell before leaving.

You can find other posts on importing a bike into OZ .. same process from NZ as from any other country in the world. Might be a FAQ!

Basic premise for importing a vehicle into Oz is you must have owned it for minimum 12 months, unless it is a classic or vintage show style

Once that bit is completed, then yes it can be done

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
