Carnet Rates

Something that hasn't been talked about very much here is that the Carnet des Passages has a different rate depending on where you are from.

For example, the percent duty for Canadians going to Egypt is only 55%. It is my understanding that for Brits it is on the order of 400%. When we rode from Germany to South Africa via the East Coast our most expensive country was Tanzania at 100% of the value of the bikes.

Your issuing agency will be happy to provide you with the current rates. Well, at least Suzanne at the CAA was...

The difference is pretty stark between countries.

Iran, Pakistan, India 500%
Africa 150-200%
Japan NZ and Oz 150%

150% for Japan is ridiculous!
Customs duty is 0%
And consumption tax (sales tax/VAT) is only 5%

Someone stands to make a good profit if you decide to leave your bike in Japan!
I wonder if they set the rates something like 20 years ago and never bothered to check the recent duties.

I would be interested in that they use a basis for such rates.

In general, NO.
CAA is official AIT Carnet issuer for bikes registered CA, USA, & MX.

If bike is registered UK, it's RAC; if OZ, it's Taking Your Car Overseas - Australian Automobile Association,

etc., etc
