RAC withdraws from issueing Carnets on Dec 31, 2015

I called the RAC Carnet department today, as i need to extend my carnet for the second time - third Carnet. During the call, the lady i was talking to tole me that: From the 31st December, the RAC in the UK will no longer be issueing carnets!

To renew i would need to go to a EU club to be issued with a carnet

I'm going to see if i can do this now!

This is good news I think.

Because the reason we can't go direct to ADAC is because there is a UK provider.

I can confirm this is the case we were advised by the FIA a few weeks back of these changes but were not able to confirm this publicly at the time.

You were quick with your pertition email Martin!

My application for an ADAC carnet is in the post. Hopefully they can expedite as i'll ideally need it in 2 weeks after i've not had response from the RAC for over 3 weeks...

Yesssssssssssss!!!!
I almost cried with excitement when I saw and read the news in the Overland Sphere FB page. I am so happy.
I travel at very low costs as I only work 60 days a year and I can now afford to get out if the EU again.
Next up is to get the uk insurance agencies to insure vehicles as standard for Morocco - LIKE ALL OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRYS GET!!!!!

Great the ADAC are much more reliable :-) , As you can imagine i am quite happy the RAC are stopping... but needed to wait for them to tell someone publicly first before issuing the update!

I just followed from the link to ADAC to the above and finally understood the process. The RAC version was unfathomable and probably written by an insurance lawyer with an accountant standing over him .

Already on an RAC carnet

We've been on an RAC carnet for the past 4 years. They emailed the other day to tell me this good news.
I'm just hoping that ADAC won't have a problem issuing a carnet for a vehicle already overseas.....
We have until May so plenty of time to work it out.
Has anyone compared the various organisations that we can now go to?

I have talked to Carol from the RAC (carnet@rac.co.uk) who says the RAC will not object to anyone who wishes to apply to another organisation.

Until the end of this year, Anna from the ADAC (cdp@adac.de) still needs written confirmation from the RAC, which Carol has helpfully obliged with.

There were NO questions asking about the current location of the vehicle...

For me it's a big cash win compared to the RAC. Last year, on a £5k motorcycle i paid £1900 and hope to see ~£1000 back - a cost of ~£900.

For the ADAC carnet, i'm paying:
1500 Euro deposit
295 Euro fee (per year)
3.50 Euro postage or ~53.91 Euro courier (i took the latter being in a hurry)

I will get 1500 Euro back, giving me a cost of ~£250.

That equates to over a month of good living!

Hi guys, I know it's an older thread but it seems to be the best informed on the ADAC replacing RAC Carnet situation.

Does anyone know the process of securing a bank guarantee for the ADAC Carnet? Anna from ADAC told me that the security deposit can most likely only be issued by a German Bank, and she was not sure if the bank would issue the gurantee seen as I am a UK resident as opposed to a German.

Has anybody gone the ADAC route and secured a bank guarantee?

We are looking at 2 Carnets for full security deposit so coughing up a 6000 Euro deposit isn't an ideal situation to get our Carnets issued

Any ideas guys?

People have talked about the bank guarantee and the deposit options to secure a CDP through the ADAC - but does anybody know if they offer the insurance indemnity option like the RAC used to?

Any conclusion to the bank guarantee option? Any successful applicants?

And by insurance indemnity do you mean for the vehicle? or for the deposit itself?

Insurance indemnity (for the vehicle itself):

From memory, the RAC ask for the value of the vehicle. They then multiply that figure by the highest import tax of all of the countries you are going through, then ask for 10% of that figure (or something like that).

Upon handing the CDP back you get a certain amount back. I can't remember the breakdown of figures but it something similar to that.

You got 50% of the insurance back once the carnet had been successfully cleared with the RAC. No other country seems to operate the insurance scheme - I've discussed it with many other travellers, they have all been using deposits or bank guarantees. The upside is that it's up to you to decide how much to declare as the value of the vehicle.....and you get 100% back so long as you don't do anything wrong.
We haven't applied for our next carnet yet, we will shop around as its not just the ADAC that you can go to - there's also the TCS in Switzerland, the Automobile Club in France, the Belgian RAC.....etc. Depending on your situation, one of these will certainly be cheaper than others. I've come to the conclusion that the French system looks most interesting for us.
