One way ticket to Argentina
I know this question has been asked before, but has anyone recently entered Argentina with just a one way air ticket and had to explain that they were collecting their motorbike and riding out of the country??

I've just phoned QANTAS and they seem to think I might get turned around in Buenos Aires.

If in doubt, you can always have a one way, full fare ticket purchased to leave the country and just canel and refund it after you land.

Having said that, if I remember correctly, a couple of years back I landed on a one way ticket from SA and had only my bike papers on standby if needed to explain the purpose of my trip. From there the one way ticket was cheaper than a return, don't know about from Oz but from some destinations the return is around the same price as a one way.

Argentina doesn't care if you have a one way ticket. The only people who care is the airline because if you are refused entry into Argentina, then the airline is responsible for taking you back to Australia. So you have to convince the airline that they will not be liable...the best way is to have some sort of documentation of an onward flight or ferry from Argentina to another county....A simple solution is to get a ferry reservation from Buquebus ferry from BsAs to Uruguay. print it out and show the airline when you board with your one way flight ticket. everyone will be happy. cancel ferry ticket later.

One way ticket to Argentina
We had the same problem when we flew from Brisbane to BA in June 2008. Malaysian Airlines did not want to let us board the fly. We explained that our bike was in Argentina and we were riding out. The check-in staff checked the regulations for Argentina and decided that it was a grey area and let us go. When we entered Argentina they did not even ask us for a ticket out or even what we were doing. Just stamped out passport and we were gone.

Hey I've done this, what I did was I booked a return ticket from another travel agent, asked for the itinerary and then said I would like to think about it before purchasing and then I never purchased.

From there I got on the emirates flight from Melbourne to NZ without being asked but when I checked in for Aerolineas Argentinas they asked me about the return flight, then I gave them the itinerary which wasn't officially booked but they looked at it and said no problems.

On the itinerary though, it said 'pending' or something, I was lucky they didn't see this.

On a side note, I found out afterwards that a return ticket was about the same price, probably worth doing this as you'll have to come home at some point anyway and they're easy to transfer.

Also it's legal to enter Chile without a return ticket but not Argentina I don't think and even so most flight attendants won't believe you.

As a follow up, in the end I booked a ferry ticket to Uraguay for $40 (which has come and gone now, it wasn't worth trying to get the money back), but when I check in with QANTAS the lady just said "great, have a lovely trip"!! Like Ken and Carrol said, no problems in BA, they just issue the visa and stamp the passport, no questions.

Paranoia can be a bitch at times!!

I had no problem in late 2007 !! I was also worried from the stories of airlines refusing you etc.

Argentina don't care. They just stamp your passport and wave you through.

AirFrance don't ask questions and you can buy a single fare with them.

The only problem though, is that you have to fly with the gong show that is Air France !!

Flew in twice without return ticket. Once from Frankfurt (TAM Airlines) once from Santiago (Air Canada). Never got asked any questions – I didnt even know this might be a grey area...

This seems to be a problem of Aus/NZ airlines. I had this problem already in 1997 when flying Bangkok-Christchurch-Bangkok. They wanted me to have a Thai Visa before letting me board the plane in BKK. But a European can only get that outside of Thailand of course. Solution: Get a full fare, fully refundable one way ticket NZ to Australia and an Aussi Visa, which could be arranged online at BKK Airport. That actually worked back in 1997!

When flying from Germany to BsAs on a one-way ticket there was no problem at all. Neither on my current trip, when I arrived in BsAs from Hamburg by ship. The Argentinians don't care at all. Good luck convincing Air NZ or Quantas about that... Indeed, booking the cheapest onward ticket (Bus or Ferry to Uruguay) is probably the easiest solution.
