Trip planning step-by-step Protocol/Procedure/Process

Does anyone have or have access to what they consider to be a definitive list of the step-by-step process of planning a long trip? I'm thinking of what they think is the right sequence in which to carry out every important step of the process.

I'm planning a 14-month ride, two-up, from London to the northern-most part of Europe then to the southern tip of Africa and home again. I could work it out but if someone has already done it, it'd be helpful.

We are getting ready for a trip from Canada to Argentina in September at the moment. For us, it helps having a big pinboard at home. Our first step was to decide places we want to see, covering th emap in multicoloured pins, then we started making lists of kit needed on the board, money needed, savings we need, documents and are ticking them off as we go! We have also sold all furniture in our second bedroom and renamed it the travel planning headquarters where we are laying out all items we will take on the trip! We are sort of organised?!
