It's that European Green Card again

I’m reading a lot of conflicting information about getting third Party insurance for Europe, for my Land Rover CSW 110, 2005.
For example (1)“Can’t get it going into Greece from Turkey” (“Greece doesn’t do it for foreigners” –only, then, for Greeks, who-I would have thought, if returning to Greece-would already have insurance, taken out in Greece??); (2a) “Get it in Turkey for all of Europe”; (2b) “You can’t get it in Turkey for all of Europe”; (3) Knopf Co. will do it for almost Euro 2,000 (two thousand) for 12 months (2,000, was that??); (4) Don’t get it in advance because in any case you’re going to have to pay out again at individual borders.
Please, what is the best plan? Leaving in three weeks, into Turkey from Syria or Iran, depending on local situation (looking more each day that it will be Iran).

Doesnt the vehicle has the be registered in an EU country to have greencard ???

Why not just buy 3rd party cover in the country you're visiting. Probably a lot cheaper too.

Don't think the vehicle has to be EU registered to get Green Card, otherwise the Russian vehicles queuing up with me at the Pskov-Latvia border wouldn't have been able to buy it. I know that now European Russia is in the Green Card area, but it wasn't in 2008.

Also think that if you buy any 3rd party cover in any EU country these days, it will effectively = green card in that due to EU law, it automatically gives 3rd party cover in any green card member state ie the EU plus some neighbours.

You're reading a lot of conflicting information because some people are uninformed, because the "rules" are complicated, and/ or because you're planning an
unusual itinerary.
For example:
You don't say for how long you want/ need a Euro Green Card for your Land Rover.
You mention "Knopf Co." = ~ Euro 2000 for 12 months.
Does that mean you expect to need Euro Green Card for 12 months?
Do you know that you can buy Green Card in one month increments, i.e., from 1 month up to 12 months.
All/ any of the Green Card brokers can sell you Green Card in one month
increments, e.g.
TourInsure - insurance cover for the best protection of you and your car
(open .pdf file for premiums)
= Euro 208 for 1st month; up to Euro 1187 for 12 months.
It will always be approx that expensive if you expect to need it for 12 mos.

If you buy Euro Green Card in advance from
Green Card (Knopf)
How does the European Green Card Insurance work? (Mototouring)
or
TourInsure

you will still have to buy (extra) insurance crossing borders into Iran, Syria, Turkey, valid for each of those countries only
But the Euro Green Card will then cover you after crossing into Greece or Bulgaria.
See coverage map from Mototouring:
http://www.mototouring.com/assets/im...eencardmap.JPG

Put another way, based on your original conflicting information above
(1) is probably true
(2a) probably not possible to get it for all of Europe in Turkey
(2b) probably true
(3) true, but total premium depends on total amount of time you need it, as above
(4) not true, once you have entered the European countries shown in map linked above.
