Foreigner buying a bike in USA/Canada

Hi,

I fancy doing the N.America to TDF but think that it's nonsense to ship my bike over from Europe and then ship it back again at the end.

It makes more sense to buy a bike in the US or Canada and return there to sell it at the end.

I have heard that non residents can't buy a motorcycle in the US.

Does anyone know if there are any restrictions on a Paddy (Irish) buying a bike in the US or Canada and riding it out of the country to TDF?

Happy New Year Y'all

W!

I think you will find getting a bike in the USA a bit cheaper. There is no regulation saying a non residents can't buy a motorcycle. People do it every year. You will need a valid licence to ride here do us all a favor and get one at home. It will be good the whole way down.

Insurance you will need that and the one you get in the USA will more than not cover Canada as well but not Mexico or South.

No Carnet not any place in the Americas.

You will need an address some bike shops will let you use their address. It is for the insurance but you will need the bikes plates as well sometimes places take bit of time. You can ride on the paper plate the shop will give you but you need the real deal to go to Mexico. Used bikes have a plate transfer the title and get new tags and you are good for a year.

This topic has actually been covered in much detail already regarding the USA:

If you look (or use the nifty search feature), you will often find your questions have already been answered on the HUBB.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
