Stahlratte to Cuba

Looking for riders that are booked for, or considering the Stahlratte to Cuba on Feb 28th 2019. When are you crossing the US-Mex border and how many days are you planning to the Yucatan?

Thanks, David

Did you do a RR? Where did you ship the bike from and what was the cost? Did you return the same way?

I only used 3 question marks there. But I have many more.

STAHLRATTE web site has all your info. No ride reports, yes both ways on ship

I would check with an air cargo in Canada? I doubt it but you might try them? Your not going to get ANY help clearing moto in CUBA, since you will have to plate it there and MANY restrictions on importing anything.. I tried sending my moto over with a tour group but they ALL are protecting their contacts.

Still the best option to run Cuba by yourself is the Rat, private rentals in Cuba are illegal, I tried to find an individual who wanted to make a few pesos,

Scooter rentals, but no motorcycles AFAIK.

Couple of us cleared our own bikes off the Stahlratte during a period when Ludvig wasn’t captaining. It was slow and frustrating, but we got it done eventually. If you can get the bike to one of the international ports, you can probably do the TIP (and placard, and license) yourself if you really want to.

Otherwise, there is at least one local who clears bikes into Havana. I met him, and he’s well-known for this (and for leading tours of Europeans), but I’ve forgotten his name and I’m away from home right now. Do some searching—here, ADVrider, Lonely Planet Cuba forum. So again, if you can get a bike into a port, you can enter and ride. That includes private boats, private planes, major airlines, surface shipping....people have done it, and so can you (if determined).

Stahlratte is the obvious choice if you’re not in a group.

Hope that’s helpful.

Mark

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
