Wow, sounds like a great trip! Color me jealous!
Someone mentioned hostles above, and I wanted to mention that they are pretty decent. Not nice, by any means, but they tend to do the trick rather nicely. Typically you have a shared bathroom, and you can stay in a dormitory style room, or in a private room. My wife and I take the kids and get a private room in Moab all the time. By the way, they have dormitory rooms that are Male, Female, and Co-ed, so if you are not one to want to sleep in the same room as some hippy chick you have never met before, well, be sure to specify!
I expect the hostels in the US are more expensive, but for a price concept it seems like they are about seven to ten bucks per person per night. For a USA rate, that is smoking good.
Cheers

I'm heading that way
Leaving Monday, from Vancouver, BC which I suppose means I ought to start packing soon. built myself some pannier racks yesterday.
I'll be riding to Sacramento, California, then either east in the southern USA, and south in Tx, or the Baja route and then over to Merida to visit family and down.
I'm on a '79 cx500, No set route yet, decide as I go. but I do need to be working on the blog/website a fair bit, which means lots of stops for photo's etc.
I'm going until April/May as well.
I'm a photography student, so I'm getting some credit for the trip report, and doing some online classes as well.
Ideally I was thinking it would be really interesting to go south along the W coast of south America, and north either in the center or eastern side, then back up to the east coast of Canada, and across.

It's been 3 weeks I havent logged in it's crazy as time is flying! It's nice to see ppl getting ready and leaving for an adventure! Myself, I left today, I still don't know where I'm gonna be tommorow but that's ok.
Thank you all for the replies, help and infos, I couldn't have wish for more. I know a few riders coming, I just havent met anyone yet.
By the way, I'm in Whitefish right now and will keep heading South.
To be honest, I don't reallyt care where I'll be entering Mexico, I'd just like to be with other riders when it's gonna happen, so feel free to drop me a line, anyone is welcome to join me (us), you know what i mean... You'll make a happy mom :P Hope to see you on the road!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
