Baja 1000 (sort of), Feb/March 2018
Greetings,
I am planning a 2 week trip into the Baja, launching from San Diego. My plan is to ride mostly off pavement following "Baja 1000" routes, but then escaping the rough stuff for evenings in relative civilization (I enjoy my fish tacos!). The window for the trip is loose, mid February through mid March, good weather and even better, baby whales to see and pet!!
I will be riding an "adventurized" WR250R, based on my recent experience in Mongolia, an epic tale best shared in person with tequila. Things about me worth knowing; I spent most of my 20s pedaling a mountain bike around Eurasia (spent the better part of a year cycling the Silk Road), I am an avid alpinist whose "go light" philosophy has carried over to my moto life, I dont mind "independent" riding where the daily destination is the sole coordination point. I view having one other rider out there on a shared itinerary as a premium insurance policy worth having.

Baja 1000 (sort of)
Hola,
Your trip and style sound like what I am looking for. I have yet to ride in Baja but want to do a trip in March (see the whales for sure). I also would prefer to ride mostly dirt but sometimes I like to get on the pavement to have a "cruiser" day. Fish tacos will be an important diet item as will some and some tequila.
I typically ride alone in the US but feel like a buddy would be important in Baja for security, mechanicals, navigation and just a riding partner. I can have a rather loose schedule and two weeks sounds about right. I would be coming from the Northern California area (Lake Tahoe) and could meet up in San Diego. I am riding a bit bigger bike, KTM 1090, but I am a quite good dirt rider. My idea of good accommodations would be some camping and some hotels. I also am a mountain biker and ride almost daily in the summer and ski 4 days/week in the winter.
I get what you say about "independent" riding which is why I often ride solo. I did 19 days in mainland Mexico (copper canyon) with 4 others and it was an awesome ride. A little independence gives freedom though.
I would only be able to leave after about March 11 but actually the later in March the better.
Let's connect somehow soon and chat. I have not used HU site before so not sure what the protocol is.

Hi Truckee
I think we can make this happen! I am also new to HUBB. For starters, lets simply exchange email. Mine; thekossack@yahoo.com. From there we can exchange cell#s and/or FB accounts.
My launch dates are flexible, but mind you, the baby whale whale thing has a window (mid Feb to mid March), and Negro Guerrero is THE place to make it happen. That said, my reference for a riding route (desiring mostly dirt) is based on a "Baja 1000" inspired plan by veteran ADV rider "GPS Kevin." Here is the link he provides (with maps and info): Baja California Discovery Route - gpsKevin Adventure Rides
I am totally down with a camping/hotel destination itenerary. Having car toured Baja several times, I am comfortable with that. My only one lodging desire is a pilgrimage to an off road only, ADV rider joint called Mikes Sky Ranch, which seems pretty awesome, and is an achievable day 1 ride from the border; http://www.totalescape.com/lodge/ADS/mikes.html
Send me your email and lets get the ball rolling!!

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
