There is plenty of free camping on BLM land in the western states, but your options are increasingly limited the further east you get - everything east of Texas seems to be owned by someone!
I've just spent the last three months riding across the country (I'm on my way back as we speak), and to be honest, unless you have a reason to go all the way to Florida, I really wouldn't bother - it is expensive, flat, dull, and the people (and traffic) are insane! Even the weather couldn't make up for the fact I felt fleeced and harassed at every turn...
If you are intent on riding coast to coast, there is lovely country (and people) in Arkansas and Tennessee - I'd just carry on east (into NC) from there? In the more rural and forestry areas, you'll probably find some nice wild spots to camp too... a friendly farmer might even let you use a corner of his land?
