Time, Carnet and Myanmar

Oooo, my first thread. I'm excited. Hope this is in the right place.
Been thinking of a trip now for a few years and think I've finally decided on a route. Starting in my home country of the uk it's across Europe to Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and into India before heading for Myanmar and onward to Thailand and Malaysia and across the islands as far as I can before shipping to Oz and round there to Nz and then back to OZ and then shipping from Perth to SA and then back to the uk up the east of Africa. Big trip for me. Especially when my weapon of choice will be a CG 125. Keeping it real. I have no doubt the bike will make it and I'm traveling fairly light, got all my gear to around 25kg.
So here's the crux of the thread. Want to split the trip up so I can come back and earn some money. So thinking 6 months to OZ (then 6 months earning back in the uk) 6 months in OZ and NZ (6 months back in uk earning) then the final 6 months up through South Africa.

Do these travel times seem reasonable ?
And how is it leaving the bike on an open carnet to come back and work ? Could it be stored at a port out of one country but not in the next, so its in no mans land effectively ?

And even getting there. How's the crossing of Myanmar ? Guided from what I can pick up but that's just the same as Pakistan and Iran is it not ? Any info from you guys would be amazing.

Oh, not doing the trip till 2020 so I know a lot of things can change but I gotta start somewhere.
Cheers guys.

Can it? Yes. Bond store if I have it right. That kind of storage is very expensive!

The carnet in Australia is 'good' for 12 months total, even if your not with the bike the carnet clock keeps ticking.

Is there a carnet free country in your plans? That may be the place to leave the bike.

South and North America are carnet free .. might be easier to travel there if you need to come back for work/money.

Lots of options. You also need to think about the weather - monsoons, heat, snow...

Cool. Thanks for that. So if I kept the travel and then returning for work to both below 12 months I could get the bike into Oz (and again into SA when I do this again next work break) and then renew in the that country. Dependent on the cost that is. Does anyone have any figures ? If its really bad maybe Fly the bike home with me (CG 125s will go hand luggage right ?). Or as you say, leave it in a carnet free country. Hmmm, where's my map.
Thanks again.

The 12 months is a limit for Australia under a carnet - other countries may be similar.

Humm if you ship by sea then the shipping time will be longer .. so that can count to your time at home... just another thing to consider. Note .. as some have found .. do not leave untill your bike leaves.

You'd want to get a quote - they don't list prices. Container Storage | Trojan Transport & Bond Services

Even a folding bicycle won't go as hand luggage though they might go a 'sporting goods' depending on who and were you fly.

It is indeed mandatory with guides and permits in Myanmar. The same with Thailand, although some travellers «slip through» at some of the smaller bordercrossings with Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. But coming from the Myanmar side theres no way around that. So its going to be costly and boring and very inconveniant as well.

Six months UK-Oz is probably possible but in my opinion (and I have ridden most of that stretch) its not a great way to do it. For example I spent 3,5 months in Indonesia alone and afterwards I wished I spent more time there.
Remember also that the shipping from Dili (East Timor) to Darwin (Oz) takes at least 18-20 days as the ship goes from Dili to Singapore and then returns to Darwin, add up a week of intensive cleaning (your bike needs to be STERIL to get into Australia) and another week of getting the bike through customs, quarantine inspection etc - you will spend more than a month on that alone. I think it would be better if you try to save up more time to spend on your travel.
Just my five cents though...

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
