Hotel attack Ivory Coast

Just like in Tunisia, Mali and Burkina Faso, now the Ivory Coast has seen armed gunmen storm 2 beach resorts.

I know the hotels which were attacked. They're quite luxurious, and unlikely to include many overland motorcyclists among their guests. On the other hand, I've stopped in for drinks and to swim in one of their pools, which I'm thinking might be worth considering carefully in the future.

The recent attacks appear to target the kinds of places favored by wealthy expats, NGO representatives, politicians, and business people. They're mostly in capital cities--Bassam was the capital at one time, which accounts for its remnant grandeur. That's also worth thinking about. I'm no expert in this sort of thing, but it begins to seem like a good idea to avoid places like Radisson Blu, Hotel Splendid, and L'Etoile du Sud.

The odds of being involved in one of these attacks is still almost zero.

The Idea of Terrorism is to make you think you are not safe, in reality you very much are so, at least from Terrorism.

As travelers your greatest dangers are still simply driving/riding, nature (Flash floods, mudslides etc) and disease.

I wont lose sleep over any of it, like I always say, nobody thinks twice about going to Chicago or LA, between the two there are 700 Murders a year.

To me it seems somewhat perverse for someone who enjoys travelling in unusual places with two wheels and a stack of horsepower and with a bottle of highly flammable liquid pressed against your most valuable parts to worry about terrorism...

Also, Europe looks just as 'vulnerable' now. As others have said - the thugs win when you give in to the bullying. It's a miniscule risk, don't let it trouble you.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
